Whenever I present to groups about sound therapy or talk with people at trade fairs, I often get expressions of concern and questions about heavy metal music. These are valid concerns, so I decided to take a closer look. My closer look has provided some interesting insight.

Heavy metal music has been a personal journey for our family. Our son, Matt, is lead guitar in a heavy metal band. It is his favorite music. He is a fabulously talented guitarist. Matt is also an early indigo child and one of the wisest, old souls I know. If I need advice, I will often ask Matt. He is one of the kindest, compassionate, joyful and authentic people I know.

Heavy metal music touched our family in a very personal way when Matt entered grade 10 in high school. By the second term, Matt was suffering from a clinical depression. For him, it was a true dark night of the soul.

Medication and intervention were refused as he relied on his own inner wisdom and healer. From a very young age, this wise old soul has preferred to heal himself. Mind you, for a broken arm, he was taken to the hospital. The doctors were amazed at how quickly he healed.

What he found during this dark night of the soul was an expression of what he was going through in the form of heavy metal music. If he was feeling really angry, for example, he would play some really angry music, we would plug our ears, and shortly, he would emerge from his room calmer.

Humanity as a whole is undergoing a shift in consciousness right now and part of this shift involves understanding and creating a relationship with our collective shadow. As an individual, some of the unconsciousness mind becomes conscious. As a species, some of our collective unconscious is becoming conscious and we are getting a good look. As a result, humanity is experiencing a collective dark night of the soul.

The great psychiatrist, Carl Jung wrote about the shadow and coined the term collective unconscious. One of the things he said was, "To confront a person with his shadow is to show him his own light." (Good and Evil in Analytical Psychology (1959). In Collected Works 10. Civilization in Transition, p. 872.)

He also said, "One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious." (The Philosophical Tree (1945). In Collected Works 13: Alchemical Studies, p. 335.)

The gift of heavy metal music is that it forces us to look at our collective shadow. We have been shoving it under the rug for millennia. It has grown deep and dark there. By bubbling up in music and art, it forces us to take a good look and make some choices about what we see.

Many singers are unaware of the simple and effective techniques that can be used to keep their vocal cords healthy:

1.Stay hydrated, drinking at least two liters of water daily

3.If you feel your voice getting tired with a scratchy or tingly sensation, stop singing

4.Avoid using a glottal attack

5.Engage the the vocal cords by actively speaking the words of your song

The Structure of your Vocal Cords

Your vocal cords are capable of amazing feats. They can vibrate at more than 1000 cycles per second, and resist large amounts of pressure and energy with great speed and, dexterity. The vocal cords are surrounded by three layers of mucous that act as a lubricant; a special protective coating that allow the vocal cords to contact each other and cycle through the sound waves at very high speeds and volume. It's helpful to consider the “water structure” of the vocal cords, and recognize the essential role that mucous plays in the health of the vocal cords. In order for them to function properly, you must drink enough water!

Similarly, clearing your throat is to be avoided, because it scrapes off this precious mucous so necessary to the high speed vibration of the vocal cords. When you clear your voice because of “phlegm”, your body will immediately send more to continue to protect the vulnerable layers of muscle that lay beneath the outer layers of mucous. If you continue to clear and sing, these inner layers of the vocal cords will swell up, preventing an even closure and resulting in a broken sound. That is why if you feel your vocal cords starting to get inflamed with a scratchy or tingly sensation, it is important to stop singing right away. Sometimes it only takes a minute or two for them to recover, but sometimes longer, much longer to recover depending on the extent of the injury to the inner layer of the vocal cord.

Adduction, or Vocal Cord Closure

When you make a sound, the vocal chords begin to vibrate, or adduct, The opposite of adduction is abduction (when things are taken apart from each other). The critical moment for a singer is when adduction is initiated after breathing, because the first wave of vocal cord closure requires the most energy, and sets up the dynamics for whatever notes follow. In other words, when you start to sing, don’t blast your vocal cords with too much air, but try to engage them gradually on the flow or air, avoiding any muscular motion in your throat. When you initiate adduction properly, your voice flows effortlessly with power and emotion. This we will refer to as balanced initiation, where air meets vocal cord in perfect balance and energy.

The chief enemy of this balanced initiation of the vocal cords is the glottal attack. A glottal attack happens when the epiglottis closes and releases at the moment of initiation. This can be a little subtle to detect at first, but the easiest way to learn and understand it is to watch my video describing the vocal cords. You can feel the epiglottis closing when you swallow or cough, but the most dramatic feeling comes if you pretend to throw up (Yuck!). The epiglottis closes the throat and protects the voice and lungs from liquid intrusion. When you sing, it’s easy to use a glottal attack to initiate adduction, but it will lead to damage of the vocal cords, limit your range, cause you to run out of breath and sing of key. In other words, it’s simpler for the brain to figure out pitch with the glottal attack, but everything that happens after that first split second of initation is doomed! This is why:

Immense pressure can be restrained with the epiglottis, much more than the vocal cords can handle generally. Once the epiglottis is released, the vocal cords become overwhelmed with air pressure, and cannot sustain the adduction for very long.

The action of the glottal attack scrapes the mucous off of the the vocal cords, causing strain and inflamation.

The closure of the windpipe at the epiglottis causes the resonant spaces above the larynx to become blocked, preventing the pharynx and head voice from resonating, and preventing an even blend between chest voice and head voice.

Engaging the Vocal Cords

Singing is not all about relaxation. If you completely relaxed everything, there would be no sound! The art of singing well is the proper engagement of the “little” muscles that control the vocal cords, while relaxing the “big” outer muscles that interfere with proper functioning of the voice. The “Big Muscle” groups that can interfere with the functioning of the vocal cords are :

The jaw

The neck

The tongue

The epiglottis (when initiating with a glottal attack)

Some of the “Little Muscle” groups inside the larynx that control the voice at the Balance Point are the:

Thyroaratanoid (TA) muscle (primarly controling the chest voice and making the pitch lower)

Cricothyroid (CT) muscle (primarily controling the head voice and making the pitch higher.

It is an oversimplification to describe the workings of the vocal cords limited to these two muscles, because in reality there are several sub muscle groups working together to control the vocal cords, and the way in which the operate is highly complex. But for the purposes of understanding, it is helpful to imagine just two, with the TA muscle grounding you to your lower, chest notes, and the CT muscle grounding you to your higher, head voice notes. Here again, the video is most helpful to hear the action of these muscles. The key to the health of the vocal cords is the effective engagement of the TA and the CT muscles, without tightening the Big muscle groups that constrict the muscles surrounding the larynx and vocal cords. This engagement I refer to as “Good Grip”, and makes the voice have a somewhat reedy or edgy quality. It is the quality of speech, which I refer to as the Balance Point.

There is a misconception among many singers about the notion of grip, because many singers mistakenly believe that there should be complete relaxation in the voice box. If you sing this way, your voice will be very breathy and airy, and you will run out of breath quickly. The result of this insufficient adduction is a very tired voice, because inevitably, the lack of grip at the vocal cord level results in an activation of the big outer muscles, or a “Bad Grip” of the voice. All of this can be simply discovered by watching your face as you sing. Are there tendons sticking out in your neck? Is your face wrinkled as you sing high? Is your tongue shriveling up as you sing? Work to relax the big muscles you can see with your eyes, and engage the little muscles inside the larynx that give the voice the spoken, edgy quality of adduction.

The master concept behind the control of the vocal cords is the action of speech, or the Balance Point. When you talk with a sincere, natural voice, your vocal cords adduct. Singing requires a wider dynamic range of pitch and volume, and so it can be difficult to maintain adduction of the vocal cords. But the moment that the vocal cords stop adducting, whether due to too much air pressure, tension in the outer muscles, or some other imbalance in the voice, the listener can perceive that the artist is no longer "sincere", and the song looses it's meaning. Therefore, the quest for the proper vocal technique is a quest for sincerity or honesty, where the message of the song comes through you with power, clarity, and emotion. Having good coordination of the vocal cords and surrounding muscles is the key to this goal.

The black keys are known as sharps or flats, named after the nearest white key to them on their left or right. For example, the black key between the white C and D keys is known as C sharp OR D flat.

A chord is a group of 3 or more notes that when played together make a complete sound. When this sound is played rhythmically, and chords used in a particular sequence, a background sound is created that can support a melody (the main tune) or lyrics (vocals).

Let's learn piano chords - by mastering just 4 easy ones you can be playing songs in no time at all. These are the chords C, A minor (or Am), F and G. These are all played using just the white keys, so you should be able to master this in just a short space of time. To play the chord of C, with your right hand, simply place your thumb on middle C, your middle finger on E and your little finger on G. Play these three notes at the same time - and you are playing the C chord.

If you move the whole shape of your hand along two notes to the left, you will play the chord A minor. Your thumb will be on A, your middle finger on C and your little finger on E. Play this for a while, then alternate between the chords of C and A minor.

Now add the chord of F to your repertoire by moving your hand two more notes to the left of your A minor chord, so your thumb is on F, your middle finger on A and your little finger on C.

Finally, by moving your whole hand shape one note to the right, you will be playing the chord of G (i.e. the notes G, B and D).

By repeating the chord sequence of C, Am, F and G you will start to get familiar with it. Your hands may hurt a little at first, but this is normal for a beginner. Keep at it.

Don't Blame the Drummer

I was in a musical funk and in search of some new material to listen to. An album that would reveal a little more upon every listen. In the past, records by Wilco, The Jayhawks, Boston, Weezer and Pete Yorn had done the trick. Now, I was coming up empty. I blindly reached into the CD case and pulled out the first disc I touched; The Police's Zenyatta Mondatta. Jeez, this vinyl record had lived on my turntable for months when I was in college. I spent a semester listening to the entire album at least once a day, digesting every lyric and drum fill. Now as I was driving, I stuck it in the player waiting to hear how it would sound after all this time.

It was just what the doctor ordered. A real band playing music before the pro tools era of "fixes." Simple arrangements allowing the instruments to breathe and the spaces to take effect. And of course, the unparalleled creative energy of Stewart Copeland's drumming. This guy wrote the book on a style of drumming that we haven't heard before or for that matter, since. Songs like "Bombs Away" and "Driven to Tears" now sounded as fresh as ever. His bell and ride cymbal patterns transcend rhythm and at times sound like counter melodies. Granted, Sting has proven to be a star all on his own, but I think that some recording artists are not better going solo.

This got me thinking about artists who also parted with their drummers. Tom Petty and drummer Stan Lynch. The Pretenders and Martin Chambers. AC/DC and Phil Rudd. Aerosmith and Joe Perry (They recorded an entire album with another drummer and shelved it after it was decided "it didn't sound like Aerosmith"). What about R.E.M. and Bill Berry, or The Replacements and Chris Mars? Some of these bands have wisely reconnected with their drummers. However, it looks to me that these break-ups were an effort by the artist to move on, move up, be better and reach a higher station in the business, as if it was the drummer holding them back.

So, how did it work out? Has Tom Petty exceeded the standards of "American Girl" or "Breakdown" since the firing of Stan Lynch? How did it go for R.E.M.? If today were the beginning of their career, where would they stand? Stewart Copeland's drumming was integral to the success of The Police. Perhaps a little too much so. Is it possible that Sting ditched The Police partly because the drummer's style branded the music? Has Sting truly done better and more innovative work since dumping Steward Copeland? It appears that some recording artists ruin a good thing just so they can say, "This is all mine and I did it all by myself."

Conversely, I imagined The Rolling Stones without Charlie Watts and Rush without Neil Peart. Dave Matthews without Carter Beauford, but I couldn't do it. Thank God that Page and Plant did not pursue Led Zeppelin without John Bonham. It seems that these artists embraced their drummer's musical personality, making it part of their brand, front and center.

After I turned on my pc to check my mails, the “Bad” news that I saw on Yahoo was the death of Michael Jackson who was barely 50. My initial reaction was death denial. I feel fondness to this person that has caught my attention because of his not so ordinary skill.

I immediately read the headlines and look for information that will confirm it and yes, it’s really true. According to the reports, he died due to cardiac arrest which is quite “Dangerous”. His sudden death shocked the whole world. No one has expected this to happen and fans were overwhelmed and are having death denial regarding MJ.

The fans crowded to the UCLA Medical Center to show their mourning. I was saddened by the idea that this multi-talented man has “Gone too soon”. He is the only artist that I simply adored because of his originality. He has created fame within himself from his songs that are breaking in to the soul together with his artistic dance moves like his “moonwalk” that became famous and no one could ever do it perfectly except him.

It’s a genius choreography which is mainly his own. No one can “Beat it” and I can’t get rid of the death denial that I feel right now regarding him. He is such a great performer that he can fully express the emotion that goes with the song. You can really feel that he enjoys his craft that could be reflected on his every breathtaking performance.

His music builds bridges from various nations whether you are “Black or White” with deep understanding that contributes to humanity and people are still in the denial of his death as of now. But despite his fame and being considered as an icon on his prime, he was very lonely up there to which his fans are not aware of and until now mourns and having death denial over MJ.

He has faced many scandals regarding child molestation and he was surrounded by kids that added ‘proof’ to the issue. His fondness of kids might be the result of his being a child that has not grown fully to become a man and to people who loves him; the initial reaction is death denial.

He started his singing career at a tender age to which must be his ‘play time’. His early exposure to work and fame deprived him of his life as a child. It created manifestation on his personality that contributed to his bizarre behavior and a reason of his childlike acts.

MJ also suffers from low self-esteem that could be reflected on his operations that he has done on his face. Fans, and even his family is still in death denial.

The influence of P.T. Barnum.

In the 1980s, Michael Jackson lays hands on a biography that will forever change his life: that of Phineas Taylor Barnum (1810–1891).

Barnum, a genius promoter and circus owner, is said to have been the first show-business millionaire, and a master hoaxer. For example, he promoted Joice Heth, a wrinkled woman said to be 161 years old. Michael devours this biography, and distributes copies among his inner circle, declaring, “I want my career to be the greatest show on earth.” (“Greatest show on earth,” is a gimmick that was used to promote the Barnum and Bailey circus.)

One hundred years after Barnum’s death, his face is featured on the Dangerous (1991) album cover, (Barnum is the man in black).

Launching rumors, using the media as a megaphone, increasing pressure, issuing denials… Michael Jackson, thrilled by this role of great hoaxer, appropriates these techniques, for example with the oxygen chamber hoax.

But what could be the ultimate hoax? What about…. coming back from the grave? Somebody did that before.

Monsieur Mangin, The French Humbug

Around 1850, Monsieur Mangin was a French maker of blacklead pencils. He lived in poverty above his small shop in the rue de Rivoli.

Then one day he had an idea. He would drive for a while around central Paris in an ornate carriage. He would stop in a crowded street, dressed in unusal royal garb, and a servant would hand him four portraits of himself which he hung on the side of the coach. He would also deliver a flamboyant speech, where he would introduce himself as «The great charlatan of France. »

This was only a start...

P.T. Barnum met Mangin in Paris and was delighted by his methods. At the end of their meeting, Mangin told Barnum that he was planning « a grand humbug, » which shall double the sale of his pencils.

A few weeks afterwards, Barnum read in the Paris newspapers that Mangin had died, and assumed that the secret plan had died with him.

Six month later, Mangin surfaced in Paris, performing exactly the same ritual drive. His « death » had quadrupled the sale of his pencil.

Mangin had spent six months in the country.

So, is Michael Jackson’s death a hoax?

There is a huge difference between Paris in the 1850’s and Los Angeles in the present days. How could a larger than life figure like Michael Jackson just vanish? A body was autopsied. Police officials were there.

Lottery Ticket is a very likeable movie starring rapper, singer and now actor Bow Wow. This could be the movie that transforms him into the next teenage matinee idol.

Bow Wow plays Kevin Carson, a nice kid with a big imagination who lives in the projects with his grandmother (played by Loretta Devine). When Kevin is not spending time hanging out with his best friends Benny (played by Brandon T. Jackson) and Stacie (Naturi Naughton), he works at the local Foot Locker. Kevin dreams of one day of running his own shoe design company, but is constantly derided by people who tell him he will never get out of the projects.

The Powerball lottery has just come to town, causing quite a lot of excitement as people in the neighborhood spend their money trying to get rich. Kevin tells anyone who will listen that the lottery is just a racket designed to keep poor people poor. But soon he too gets caught up in the fever, and he eventually purchases a ticket using the numbers given to him in a fortune cookie.

As luck would have it, Kevin’s ticket ends up being the winner of the $370 million Powerball jackpot. But since it’s the beginning 4th of July weekend the lottery office is closed for 3 days. Now most people in that situation might hold up in a motel or their own bedroom for 3 days until the lottery office reopens … but after accidently letting it slip that he won the millions, Kevin folds the ticket into his wallet in his back pocket and spends 3 days walking around the projects.

The rest of the movie deals with Kevin trying to hold onto his ticket as everyone comes out of the woodwork to get a piece of the prize.

Comedian Mike Epps has a short but memorable cameo as the Baptist minister who after learning of the winning ticket tries to get his hands on some of the money. He is faithful to his flock but can’t help thinking about his possible future with that kind of cash. Epps is very funny and it makes you wish he had a larger role.

Loretta Devine is perfect as Kevin’s grandmother who always has a “Praise-Jesus” ready to recite. She is proud of how Kevin is growing up and is concerned about what all that money could do to him.

A couple of old-time gangsters (played by Keith David and Terry Crews) front Kevin a “bridge-loan” on his winnings and become a real problem.

Teairra Mari plays a local gold-digging temptress who tries using sex to latch onto Kevin’s millions. A real hottie, she tries to get Kevin to impregnate her, but he’s smart enough to say no.

But Kevin’s most dangerous neighbor turns out to be hardcore criminal Lorenzo (played by Gbenga Akinnagbe). Lorenzo already dislikes Kevin because Kevin refused to give him free shoes from Foot Locker. So when Lorenzo learns that Kevin is walking around with $370 million in his pocket he decides that he will stop at nothing … including killing … to get that money.

By far funniest character with the best lines has to be Kevin’s best friend Benny. He is always trying to come up with the “big ideas”, and when he sees that Kevin is being harassed by everyone he passes on the street he comes up with an absurd but very funny plot to escape the town using an old Underground Railroad map from his high school history book. Fantastic.

Lottery Ticket is a very cute movie with some amusing and thoughtful commentary about sexual responsibility and the need to be charitable to your community.

Peruvian Instruments and Music

The music of Peru is based on the influences of Spanish colonial period music combined with sounds from the musical roots of this ancient Andean country. There are many varieties of Peruvian music including coastal Peruvian music, traditional music from the highlands, and Peru Negro which is a fusion of traditional and afro-Caribbean themes. There is another type of popular Peruvian music that is called Huayano and is very much like Pre-Columbian music. Established in 1969, Peru Negro is an Afro-Peruvian style of music designed to celebrate and conserve the black culture and heritage of the Peruvian coast. It gained a reputation as it rescued conventional dance and music and became internationally recognized with the release of the album, "The Soul of Black Peru", with songs from popular Peru Negro singers. In 2001, Time Square records released the first international recording of the song "Sangre de un Don". At the time Peru Negro had only twelve members but has since grown to thirty, all of whom are very talented.

The charango is the national instrument of Peru and forms a major part in much Peruvian music. It has five strings and is similar to a mandolin or ukulele. It can have a harp-like quality if it is played as a plucked instrument but can have a stronger and more rhythmic sound if played as a strumming instrument.

Other instruments used in Peruvian music are lutes, guitars, bandurrias, vihuelas, pan pipes, and rattles made from llama toenails! A very simple instrument, very popular along the coast is the "Cajon" which means "box". Materials that make up the pipes of the pipe organ are typically bamboo or giant cane but can also be wood, plastic and metal.

The bandurria is a type of chordophone which is an instrument that makes its sounds by means of vibrating strings between two points. It was used primarily in Spanish folk music and is similar to the mandolin. The modern bandurria has twelve strings which are tuned in pairs and is classified as part of the Hornbostel Sachs set of musical instruments.

The vihuela is a type of guitar or lute derived from fifteenth and sixteenth century Spain, where its "Christian" shape made it gain popularity over the lute derived from Arabia. It typically has six strings and is very comfortable to hold. Some vihuelas do not have octave stringing in the bass but each design works equally as well for its sound which is very resonant, sweet and bright. Known as "chapchas", the llama toenail rattles are a type of percussion instrument. They are worn on the wrists while playing the drums.

Do you want to see a movie that is filled with action, suspense, and dialogue that you will never forget? Would you like to see a movie starring Brad Pitt before anybody even knew who he was? Our movie starts out with a few regular characters that could be any one of us. There is a drug deal gone bad. There is a violent shoot out that leaves everybody dead, and a stack of money, and a bag of illegal drugs sitting out in the open. Our hero happens by, and not being anybody's fool, decides to take the money, and run, literally. The movie is called "True Romance," because he happens to be in love, and broke. The boy and his love decide to take the loot and head out to California to start anew.

Before they leave, they stop off at his fathers place of work. His father is a security guard, and an ex police officer. The son figures his father still has connections, and will know of any police or gangsters are after the money. He hasn't heard anything, so the son and his girl figure they are in the clear and head out to Hollywood.

However, all is not well. The money belongs to a powerful crime syndicate. It doesn't take long for the powerful gangster to find the boys unlucky father. After unsuccessfully trying try his son's whereabouts out of him, they kill him. This is likely one of the best scenes in the movie, as the boys father, played fantastically by Dennis Hopper, gives one of the most infamous speeches regarding Italian history prior to being killed.

The mobsters chase the boy and his girl to California, and the chase is on. The boy decides to sell the drugs to a movie producer, who in turn hopes to use the drugs to seduce the girl he is in love with. The final scene is an epic shoot out that is both extremely funny and dramatically entertaining.

This stunning masterpiece is filled with now famous actors that command millions of dollars per performance. Brad Pitt, Val Kilmer just to name a couple all had hilarious roles in this fantastic movie. This movie has everything you could ever hope for in a film, as well as classic scenes and dialogues that you can refer to again and again.Directed by Tony Scott, and written by the now world famous Quintin Tarantino, this movie set the gold standard for dialogue rich action movies. There is obviously a great help if you can sight read music and have an education that allows you to understand all the markings on the page but for most guitarists - that's what they want to do.

Learning how to read tablature or tabs takes only a few minutes to understand and then any piece is available to the student to learn, provided he has a recording. This is what all music readers constantly bring up when they extol the benefits of reading music for guitar. Tablature doesn't contain any information on the timing of a piece - so what. If any musical piece is worth listening to then someone somewhere has already recorded it. With the recording and the tablature all the information is available for others to play the piece.

With modern computers there are several programs available that not only can play the traditional musical notation but also produce the equivalent tablature. With these tools, even the most complex classical or jazz piece can be learned by someone with no knowledge of reading music for guitar at all.

So it really is just a question for the individual player to answer. There is no real need to learn in order to play even to a very advanced level but if you want to go ahead.

Many newcomers, when they start learning how to play the guitar cringe when their teacher informs them that they are going to have their first guitar scales lesson. It is understandable for without knowing scales you cannot appreciate their importance and value and they can seem just like a boring pointless exercise.

It is still vital for guitar beginners to start learning some music since that is what it is all about and being able to play some tunes encourages people to work harder to learn more. Whether you write music first or lyrics first, please remember this one thing. Melody is king!

I want to explain why I believe that statement to be true.

I know when it comes to songwriting all of the elements must fit together just so. There has to be a perfect marriage of lyric, melody, structure and feel. That is the hallmark of a great song.

But I have heard too many songs that seem to focus primarily on the lyrics. The writer has poured out his or her soul to create a truly touching and beautiful story. Then those wonderful lyrics are paired with a mediocre, or even (gasp!) boring melody.

The result? A mediocre, boring song!

Those lyrics might work wonderfully on their own. But a monotonous unimaginative melody drags them down.

Appeal To The Emotions

As a songwriter, writing melody that appeals to the emotions of your listeners should be your top priority.

Why?

Because it's the melody that our brains latch onto first. A melody on it's own can make you cry, laugh and everything in between. It truly can be a direct communication to the soul. An interesting mood-evoking melody commands our attention. It makes us sit up and take notice.

Only then do we start to pay attention to the storyline. To the lyrics. And if those lyrics are top-notch: Bingo! You've hit the jackpot.

Write Lyrics As Good As Your Melody

Now, this scenario can also be looked at from the opposite side:

You write music that is truly inspiring. You then settle for the first lyrics that pop into your head. You don't bother rewriting those lyrics. You figure that since they fit the melody and tell the story they are good enough.

I did this for years! And I was always secretly embarrassed by my lyrics.

As songwriters, we must strive for that perfect balance. And it takes time and effort to master. (I'm still working on completing my apprenticeship!)

Work On Your Weakest Skill

If you only want to write music or you only want to write lyrics, that's okay. Collaborating with writers who excel at what you do not is a great way to write songs. If you love to write melody, find yourself a great lyricist. Or vice-versa.

Most of us are better at one aspect of songwriting than we are at others.

For me, it's always been writing melody that seems to come naturally. As a lead guitarist I usually opted for the slow, melodic, soulful lead over the fast shred. Through the years I've written quite a few instrumentals that I am proud of.

Lyrics have always been a struggle for me. That's why I tend to spend a lot more time working on the words to my new songs than I do the melody.

But I spend quite a bit of time on writing melody too! Because I understand how important a great melody is.

Listen To Your Melodies

Listen to the melodies you are writing. Are they as strong as your lyrics? Perhaps more importantly, can they stand on their own?

A melody should be able to stand on it's own. It should be moving, interesting, somewhat predictable and a little surprising at the same time.

I say somewhat predictable because we all need familiarity. If every line goes off in a completely different direction you will lose most of your listeners.

People must have something that they can grasp immediately. Especially in the chorus.

So go and write music that moves you. If it moves you, you can be pretty sure it will move others too.

Harmonics on the Guitar

Damp specific frets on the fingerboard of your guitar, the bell like sound that it would produce would be called harmonic. These are a must as they could help you create great music effects. Learning guitar and not paying attention to harmonic is not doing justice to music. In other words, strike the guitar string, the sound that is produced is nothing but a combination of different components. When these are taken in synchronization – could be termed as harmonic series.

There are several ways of playing these harmonics on the guitar. Some are explained below –

Open-String Harmonics

Open String Harmonics are also known as the natural harmonics. These open string harmonics could be produced by placing the fingers lightly at certain points on the fingerboard. Ensure that the strings are not pushed down; the finger should be the only thing in touch with the string.

Fretted Harmonics

The fretted harmonics is relatively difficult and hence it needs practice. Doing the fretted harmonics would need consistent practice and time. Being over ambitious and trying to learn it fast can actually harm you to a great extent. There are three things that need to go in synchronization and these are as follows:

1. Fretting of a note.
2. A soft touch is needed on the string. The touch should be 12 frets above a note that is being fretted.
3. Plucking the string is required with the above two.

The fretted harmonics could be achieved by two different methods. Artificial Harmonics and the Pinched Harmonics are the two ways to doing the fretted harmonics.

Artificial Harmonics

As established that there could be other ways of playing harmonics, for fretted harmonics this technique of Artificial Harmonics is much simple to master as compared to the others. This is an easy way to learn the fretted harmonic. It is recommended to go for this one first in order to get motivated and get prepared for the Pinched Harmonics, which is relatively difficult. All the harmonics that could be played are artificial; playing these is termed as Artificial Harmonics. According to this, the index finger’s soft touch followed by the pluck with the pinky finger; alternatively the pick held from the other fingers would work.

Pinched Harmonics

This is relatively difficult as compared to the one listed above. Modified picking technique with the accurate and steady picking hand is the pre requisite for playing the Pinched Harmonics consistently.

It being difficult doesn’t make it very different from the Artificial Harmonics. It could be understood as playing the Artificial Harmonics, just that for the pinched one we are using a plectrum. Left hand would be used to fret the notes. Go 12 frets above the hand you are fretting with, with the picking hand.

Pick needs to be gripped in such a way that the thumb and the tip are sticking out approximately the same expanse. The thumb should touch the strings briefly while you pick string at the particular points. The note should be played by the pick and the Fundamental sound should be silenced by the thumb, resulting with the required, Pinched Harmonics.

Though this would give you a fair idea about how to play the Artificial Harmonics and the Pinched Harmonics, but until you try your hands on, you would not learn.

Jazz Piano Styles

When you discover all the different styles of jazz piano, one can begin to appreciate the variations in rhythm and discern between the different feelings that each type can offer a listener.

Below are brief introductions of the four main jazz styles and how they relate to piano jazz as we have come to know it and love it today.

Early Jazz

Piano has been an important part of jazz music since its beginning in the 1890's. Before jazz became widespread, Ragtime enjoyed popularity as one of the first music crazes of the modern era.

During this Ragtime era, piano music was the one of the most popular forms of entertainment in the U.S. The ragtime craze helped to fuel the sales of pianos, especially in the North.

Jazz developed as various styles of African-American music mixed and mingled in New Orleans in the first decades of the 20th century. Blues, spirituals, ragtime, band music, and European music melted together to form what is called America's first genuine original art form. What separates Ragtime from jazz is the fact that jazz is not notated, and ragtime doesn't "swing".

Storyville was an area of New Orleans where some local places showcased small bands, and some that would just have a solo pianist. As World War I broke out, Storyville was reported as a threat to the health of or soldiers, and closed it was down. Without this venue, many of those musicians looking for work elsewhere. Jazz was soon off and running, the craze was ablaze.

Stride Piano

In the 20's, a new jazz piano style started to emerge. Stride had the bass/chord left hand pattern of ragtime, but the swing of jazz in the right hand. The pianist performed all the elements of a band: the rhythm, the bass, the chords and the melody, usually at a frenzied pace.

The style evolved from the solo pianist's desire to keep the party going. The outlets these parties provided were the main source of entertainment for many Americans.

Swing Piano

In the swing era, which lasted from the twenties into the forties, sometimes the pianist played only sporadically and sparsely, adding an extra "frill" on top of the arrangement. At the time, swing was the most popular music in America.

Be Bop and Hard Bop

The Be-Bop era evolved as a reaction to the tightly controlled arranged sound of the swing bands. There was a major change in the evolution of jazz piano. The pianist didn't have to keep playing a steady rhythmic beat, but could now convey the rhythm and harmony by just using parts of the chords. The melodies became more angular and soon became featured in New York City, mostly in the clubs on 52nd St.

In the mid fifties, jazz saw new styles emerging. The pianists could use all of the techniques in jazz to develop a style, including elements of stride, swing blues and gospel.

Moving Forward

Since the early 60's, jazz piano has taken on many facets. Jazz has become wide open to interpretation, and the contemporary jazz pianist is able to grasp inspiration from many avenues.

Yes, jazz piano does pull at the heartstrings of many of us. I suggest you take some time each day to find your “jazz ear” so that you are able to feel the passion that jazz will add to your lifestyle.

First you you have any problems with doing maintenance

First Make sure you have some electronic spray cleaner.

There are many brands, I use “CRC Q D Electronic Cleaner”

Do not try Wd /40 or something like this. You will cause

Big Problems....

Unplug your amp from the wall and remove your knobs volume,tone,bass, ect. ect.

Take note that sometimes these knobs have set screws holding them on,These can be easily removed with the right tool either phillips or flat slotted screwdriver or a hex or allen type screw remover will normally do it.

Once again be sure you have “Electronic Spray Cleaner “Only.

After you remove your knobs, Spray each pot stem for one second, and spray straight down at them not at a angle.

Be sure to use the one second rule, Dont want to really soak anything.

The reason we are spray cleaning our pots is to take away any of that horrible crackling noise, That gets present from dust, cigarette smoke if you play in bars and other dirt even spilled drinks. This special electronics spray cleans and lubricates and is very fast drying.

After you spray the pots turn the stems back and forth a lot of times, This works the spray in and cleans things up real good.

Be sure to match the stem position with the correct number on your knobs when reinstalling them.

It does not hurt to give your flip switches a little spray also,

One second right?

Next If you have a open back ,or semi open backed amp

you can vacuum it out and get the dust out of there.

Next you can take some good old fashioned Vaseline jelly and a clean rag, And use it to wipe down the vinyl covering or tolex ,even the chrome or plastic parts on the corners ,Everything will look a lot better add protection to your amps exterior even wood pieces can be cleaned with the Vaseline, If you have any wood trim on your amp.

This is fairly easy maintenance, and it not only makes your amps look better,And protects them, But the cleaning of the pots will make them function better, There for making them last longer and make your playing sound better too. These same methods will work on your pedals too.

Be sure not to over spray the cleaner, Use the one second rule.

I know I already said this but its important.

7 Buying Beginner Drum Set Tips

Tip 1: Does the drum set come with cymbals? Believe it or not but cymbals play a big role in the cost of the drum set.

Tip 2: Are the cymbals "cast" or "sheet" cymbals? Please don't let me hear another sheet metal cymbal or my ears will pop. I'm not kidding these things sound terrible and with the right research you can buy cast cymbals even on a budget. I guarantee you 100% that you've never seen a cymbal flip inside out when you were at a concert or watching a music video, so save yourself the embarrassment and get the real deal on the same budget.

Tip 3: If possible stick with a brand that has been out for awhile as they tend to be a lot better. Their hi-hat and snare hardware actually stay in place and don't fall over while playing.

Tip 4: Check out some cymbal kits that include 3-4 cymbals. They come with your standard cymbals hi-hat, crash, ride, but costs less than it would if you bought them all separately. Also make sure the kit you decide on has the right number of stands as your cymbal kit does or you'll be paying for something your unable to use.

Tip 5: What kind of tom mounting system does it use? Now you'd think this was obvious to some of the more experienced drummers but somehow it still seems to elude them today. We all know drum shells around round but why would we put a hole in the center of it just to mount them? To save a buck and prevent them drum from sounding any good that's why. It really doesn't require any extra money to get what you paid for but its keeping from getting ripped off as your new to the drum industry world.

Tip 6: A no brainer here but let me say it anyways. Does it come with a warranty? This will show you how reliable the manufacture thinks of their own set! Yes quiet brilliant of you to think that way.

Tip 7: Check to see what kind of stands come with the drum set if any at all! I highly recommend heavy duty stands as they are double jointed at the bottom and won't flex when you hit a cymbal and fall over. Silly to think they would make a stand that isn't really suppose to hold the cymbal! I hope you don't fall victim to this as its becoming quiet popular these days.

Conclusion: Not all beginner drum sets are made cheaply. Only some companies cut corners should you should keep your eye out on what you buy. Also its very possible to get a used set for a good price, so check your local paper and do a little research if your on a tight budget. You never know you may find a good deal on a classic set if they don't know what they have.

Are you learning how to play drums or wanting to buy a set? Well, the drummer's most important trait is coordination, and without that drummers would have a difficult time learning how to move all four limbs at the same time. If your not sure if your coordinated there are a few simple tests you can do.

One that most kids do for fun its rubbing your stomach and patting your head at the same time and then switch hands. Another one geared for an inspired drummer would be try and imitate a basic drum beat at your computer desk. Count 1,2,3,4...1,2,3,4 and on each count tap the desk with your right hand, and on 2 tap with your left hand, then on 4 tap your foot. It may take just a moment to get this down but if your finding this difficult then drums might be a challenge for you.

Not all of us are cut out to be drummers but if your able to do that simple beat then you have potential to learn much more about the musical aspect of drums. Drums aren't cheap even a beginner drum set is quiet expensive for what it is. I would opt out of buying a beginner drum set as they are weak and most of them out there have sheet cymbals that are basically just trash can lids that look like cymbals and flip inside out. What should you do then? Well look for a used set on Craigs List or in the paper. Might even get a good deal that comes with real cast cymbals which plays a huge role in how much the set is worth.

If your on a budget and not sure you want to buy a drum set just yet get a drum pad or aka (practice pad). They are perfect for practicing your rudiments while trying to keep quiet, and the also are very portable so you could take it anywhere. Its almost become a standard for practice pads to come with two different sides. One side would be softer and quieter (Gum Rubber) than the other and give a nice bounce (Neoprene) while the other would be more of a speed pad as its harder and louder so you can hear each stroke very well. When planning out which one is best for you its recommended that its big enough to fit your lap about (10"-12").

Drum pads make life easy, and are great to practice with a metronome at odd hours of the night. Now when starting out in drumming or maybe you don't own a beginner drum set just yet. Its highly recommended to get one of these and a pair of sticks to begin your practice on a budget. They really are quiet cheap and even after you buy a set you'll still be using your drum pad.

In The Beginning

In 1924 an inventive engineer working for the Gibson guitar company named Lloyd Loar, designed the first magnetic pickup. Using a magnet, he converted guitar string vibrations into electrical signals, which then were amplified through a speaker system. This first pickup was crude, but it was a great beginning.

The First Electric Guitar

In 1931 the Electro String Company was founded by Paul Barth, George Beauchamp and Adolph Rickenbacker, and developed the first electric guitars marketed to the general public. They made their guitars from cast aluminum and were played on a person’s lap using a steel slide much like today's steel guitar. Because of their unusual material, they were affectionately called “Frying Pans.”

The early success of the frying pans prompted the Gibson guitar company to build their first electric guitar, the ES-150 which is a legend today.

The First Solid-Body Electric Guitar

Electric guitars were quickly becoming popular, even though there was a major problem with their construction. Their bodies would vibrate due to the amplified sounds coming through the speakers they were played into, causing what we know as feed-back. The obvious remedy was to build a guitar made with a solid body which wouldn’t vibrate so easily.

As with most innovations, there is controversy over who invented the first solid –body electric guitar. Guitar legend Les Paul in the 1940’s developed his affectionately called “The Log” solid-body guitar by attaching a Gibson neck to a solid piece of wood…a railroad tie, hence the name “Log.”

Around this same time, guitarist Merle Travis and engineer Paul Bigsby developed a solid-body electric guitar that resembled the solid-body guitars that we’re so familiar with today.

The First Mass Produced Electric Guitar

Leo Fender in 1950 was the first to mass produce an electric guitar which was originally called the Fender Broadcaster. This guitar was quickly re-named to the infamous Telecaster because the name “Broadcaster” was already being used by another company. Leo followed this up in 1954 with the most renowned guitar of all time…the Stratocaster.

Leo’s success led other guitar manufacturers into developing their own mass-produced electric guitars. Most notable was the teaming-up of the Gibson guitar company with Les Paul to create the famous Gibson Les Paul electric guitar.

More Affordable Electric Guitars

During the 1960’s and 1970’s famous brand name electric guitars were too expensive for the average person to buy. Less pricey imitations quickly came to market but they were sub-standard in sound and playability. The Japanese, in the 1980’s started manufacturing electric guitars of similar quality to the more expensive American made models, but with much more affordable pricing. This prompted Fender and other leading guitar manufacturers into producing less expensive versions of their classic models. This resulted in electric guitars now being more affordable and accessible to more people.

Today, the Gibson and Fender guitar companies are still producing some of the most well-known and best made electric guitars on the market. But it’s getting crowded with other high quality brands such as BC Rich, ESP and Peavey. Innovative designs, shapes and materials are being incorporated with new technologies to produce better sounding electric guitars.

Modern guitars have built-in software allowing them to sound like other types of guitars. Some are even fitted with pickups that synthesize the sound of different instruments or record the notes in musical notation.

The electric guitar has come a long way with an interesting and inventive past and many in the industry say it has an even brighter future.

History of 60s Music

The decade of the 1960's presented social and political changes that had never been seen before. In addition to this, 60s music changed the direction of popular music and Americana as a whole. This decade forever changed America, and it was the young generation, or Baby Boomers that made it happen. After World War II, there was a dramatic increase in the population. An entire generation of young men had returned to the United States and found that the entire country had been transformed from the economically depressed area they once had left, to an economic goliath. Many of them used their G.I Bills to get an education and the country was flush with new jobs. Couples were able to settle down and start a family and they did so in astonishing numbers.

It was, supposedly, the perfect existence. The nuclear family lived in comfort. The patriarch had a good job to provide for his family and the loving wife stayed at home to raise the children. The children grew up in a world that was quickly shrinking. Radio and television were becoming permanent fixtures in every home. This technology introduced the Baby Boomers to the music of the 60s. Some of the big names in early 60s music all came out of one recording studio, the Sun Record Company, based out of Memphis, Tennessee. Artists like Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and Roy Orbison all got their start at the Sun Record Company. Many of them followed the method introduced by Presley. His music was a mixture of gospel, blues and hillbilly music. B.B. King, who is perhaps the greatest blues musician of all time, knew of Presley long before he became famous. Presley combined blues, gospel, and hillbilly music to help create a new form of music ... Rock and Roll.

His first recordings were in 1953, and he made one of his first big breakthroughs in 1956 with his appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. His style was so unique and attractive to the Baby Boomer generation that it helped to influence and direct cataclysmic changes in music genre. The Baby Boomers were the primary fans of 60s music, and their support was what drove other artists, like the Beatles, to develop a new style that would mark their generation as unique. Music is a cultural and social expression of the people, and that was never truer than in the case of 60s music. Baby Boomers' musical choices reflected the postmodern political and social upheavals of the time, including the assassination of a president, an unpopular war, the civil and women rights movements, and the Cold War. It was the music that remains as a lasting representation of their legacy.

Pearl Jam Rock Music CD Review

Pearl Jam is the latest Rock CD put out by the extremely group Pearl Jam and they have once again delivered a brilliant collection of tracks. I’m confident Pearl Jam fans, and Rock fans alike will be pleased with this one.

These days it’s a very rare CD on which every single song is good or better than the one before it. This CD is certainly one of those rare CDs.

This CD literally grabs your attention right from the very first note with Life Wasted and doesn't let go until the very last note of the very last song Inside Job, which is another great track by the way.

One of the refreshingly nice things about this CD is the way all of the participating artists seem to be really enjoying themselves. Combine that with the overall presentation and you’ve got one of Pearl Jam most impressive releases ever.

Overall Pearl Jam is an outstanding release. Quite possibly Pearl Jam's best to date. Really sensational from beginning to end. If you're even mildly into Rock music you'll enjoy this album.

I’m of the opinion that Pearl Jam is certainly some of this groups best work in a few years. A totally enjoyable CD and an outstanding release. What I call must have music. I give it two thumbs up because it’s a collection that even the casual Rock fan can appreciate and enjoy.

Listen to and I think you’ll agree that the song choices are excellent, the production is outstanding and Pearl Jam is clearly a group that is in top form.

While the entire CD is outstanding the truly standout tunes are track 2 - World Wide Suicide, track 5 - Marker In The Sand, and track 10 - Wasted Reprise.

My SmoothLee Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 12 - Army Reserve. It’s a great track!

Master and Learn Guitar - Revealed: Introduction To 4 Kinds of Guitar Harmonics

Let’s take a look at 4 basic kinds of harmonics that will help you to master and learn guitar.

1. Open string harmonics: By far the easiest kind of guitar harmonics that you can learn how to play are what are called open string harmonics. Open string harmonics are when you lightly place your finger over your guitar strings. You can play all of your guitar strings at once, or, you can play individual open string harmonics. The best open string harmonics are found on the 12th fret, seventh fret, and the fifth fret. There are other open strings harmonics all throughout the guitar, however, these three fret areas are by far the easiest to find and play on your guitar.

2. Pinch harmonics: Pinch harmonics are individually pinched notes on the guitar. You can choose either your open strings, or any note found throughout the guitar fretboard. With your right hand holding the guitar pick, you will take the tip of the guitar pick and pinch your guitar strings. This pinching action will produce a harmonic. For starters, practice your pinch harmonics on Strings 6, 5, and 4.

3. Tap harmonics: Tap harmonics are the hardest of all harmonic guitar styles to play. Played correctly and you will have a very sonically rich sounding guitar. The great thing with tap harmonics is that you can play individual notes or full fingered chords. With your left hand place your fingers on the note or chord that you want to play. With your right hand first finger you will be tapping individual notes or striking the guitar fretboard with all of your first finger like a long flat stretched out hammer. With your first finger you will be tapping an octave higher from where your left hand finger placement is located. For example, if the note you are playing is on the six string, third fret, you’re right first finger will strike the 15th fret, sixth string.

4. Thumb pick harmonics: Another single note harmonic style that you can utilize is a combination of your right thumb and first finger. Choose your single note or chord with your left hand. Next, place your right finger an octave higher lightly on top of the string, above the fret board. Use your right thumb as a pick. Pluck the note keeping your right hand fingering position. Thumb pick harmonics are an expansion of open string harmonic technique.
